MOTW: FORT ROMEAU
You might recognise Mike Norris as the guy who plays keyboards in La Roux’s live band. But you might not recognise him as Fort Romeau, the one man production unit currently specialising in lush deep house that nods toward Detroit and Chicago.
His forthcoming debut LP ‘Kingdoms’, out March 6, took Mixmag HQ totally by surprise. Released by the consistently on-point 100% Silk, it’s Norris’ very first release as Fort Romeau and contains 8 tracks of retro-referencing house that moves in a forward thinking direction.
We asked the man himself to go into the mix and he’s come back with a 45 minute work out that takes in Boddika, Kassem Mosse, Midland and Evan Tuell. It’s a highly rhythmic selection from a producer who has come up with one of the best records of the year so far, which you can also preview below. Check it!

Video: The Doctors Who Made the No-Pulse Heart
Heart Stop Beating is a three-minute documentary film about the no-pulse, continuous-flow artificial heart, which Dan Baum writes about in our Future of Medicine issue. It tells the story of Billy Cohn & Bud Frazier, two visionary doctors from the Texas Heart Institute, who in March of 2011 successfully replaced a dying man’s heart with the device they developed, proving that life was possible without a pulse or a heart beat.

CHORDELLA :: Biography
Conrad and Nik are the internationally recognized deejay and producer duo known as Chordella. Over the past year, the two producers have worked tirelessly, forging their unique sound. The magic behind Chordella lies within the notion that opposites attract. Conrad, originally a trance producer, and Nik, primarily a deep house artist, certainly represent opposite ends of the EDM spectrum, but the two have made it work – and in marvelous style.
Big room house is how many describe Chordella’s sound: a unique fusion of melodies, chord progressions, and driving bass lines, walking in the footsteps of bay area favorite and international superstar Max Vangeli.
The year 2011 marked the start of a new chapter for both artists; Conrad and Nik joined forces in April 2011, forming Chordella.
AND SO THEY BEGAN
After meeting at a local coffee shop through a mutual friend, Conrad and Nik mused at the idea of getting into the studio and making a track together. When the opportunity eventually emerged, both Nik and Conrad sat down in front of Cubase, and in a matter hours they laid the foundation for their first track “La Sinfonia.”
The partnership evolved. A few weeks later, seeking the attention of record labels, Conrad and Nik entered a remix contest through Om Records – for local artists, Soultice. In just an hour and half the duo nailed down a timeless remix of the instant classic “Realistic.”
After a blissful three weeks of voting, the duo placed third with their “San Francisco Mix” – merely missing out on their remix earning a release.
THE BIG BREAK
After Nik and Conrad’s early success with Om Records, the duo persevered in the studio, and soon after they earned a residency at local club, Studio 8. Continuing in a positive direction, the two producers were on the look out for their next great opportunity.
With the onset of summer, Skullcandy’s Identity Electronic Music Festival swept across the United States, spreading EDM bedlam from Boston to Los Angeles. Eager to earn a name for themselves, the duo took advantage of Skullcandy’s unprecedented offer to earn a booking on the Identity Music Festival Tour.
The contest was simple. Have an original track? Submit it. Each entry was listened to and judged by the likes of Avicii, Kaskade, Steve Aoki, The Crystal Method, Datsik, The Disco Biscuits, and Le Castle Vania – with the eventual grand prize winner playing the festival.
After weeks of voting, Conrad and Nik’s track “La Sinfonia” earned a strong twelfth place finish out of almost one thousand entries worldwide. The Identity Original Song Contest was the biggest original song/remix competition to date, and with a strong finish, “La Sinfonia” was featured in the official soundtrack of Identity Music Festival.
BUILDING THE SCENE
Soon after the success of their track “La Sinfonia,” the duo began earning bookings around the San Francisco bay area – and even an exclusive contract with Redbull.
Based in San Jose, Nik and Conrad are keen on developing the scene locally. The duo is considered one of the pillars of EDM in San Jose, assembling crowds of faithful, screaming fans on a regular basis. The party doesn’t stop with Chordella until the cops show up.
LOOKING AHEAD
With a recession sweeping the world economy, Chordella remains unaffected. Nik and Conrad continue to focus on their primary goal of high quality productions while simultaneously bringing people closer through music.
Fresh out of the studio, the duo have just finished off their newest single “What is Real,” featuring the stunning and timeless vocals of Joy Manalac with a pending release next year.
Renowned for their production prowess and technicality behind the decks, Chordella is the latest and greatest act in dance music to come out of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Video of the Day: John F. Kennedy’s 1960 Religion Speech
Republican candidate Rick Santorum raised a fuss this weekend — one of several — by saying on ABC News’This Week that he “almost threw up” after reading John F. Kennedy’s 1960 speech on religion. “I don’t believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute,” Santorum said. “The idea that the church can have no influence or no involvement in the operation of the state is absolutely antithetical to the objectives and vision of our country.”
That speech, which Kennedy delivered in Houston on September 12, 1960, is a landmark of American politics. The Massachusetts senator’s Catholic faith had become a hot-button issue in the campaign, with critics speculating darkly that as president he would take orders from the pope. Kennedy sought to allay those fears by laying out his views on separation of church and state. Here’s a key passage early in the speech:
[B]ecause I am a Catholic, and no Catholic has ever been elected President, the real issues in this campaign have been obscured — perhaps deliberately, in some quarters less responsible than this. So it is apparently necessary for me to state once again — not what kind of church I believe in, for that should be important only to me — but what kind of America I believe in.I believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute – where no Catholic prelate would tell the President (should he be Catholic) how to act, and no Protestant minister would tell his parishioners for whom to vote — where no church or church school is granted any public funds or political preference — and where no man is denied public office merely because his religion differs from the President who might appoint him or the people who might elect him.
I believe in an America that is officially neither Catholic, Protestant nor Jewish — where no public official either requests or accepts instructions on public policy from the Pope, the National Council of Churches or any other ecclesiastical source — where no religious body seeks to impose its will directly or indirectly upon the general populace or the public acts of its officials — and where religious liberty is so indivisible that an act against one church is treated as an act against all.
Kennedy, of course, went on to beat Richard Nixon two months later and become president. The speech is remembered as one of the finest in American politics, and is cited as the template for both the speech on race in America that then-Senator Obama delivered in the wake of the Jeremiah Wright controversy four years ago and a 2007 speech by Mitt Romney that addressed his Mormonism.
Santorum may be misreading Kennedy somewhat — the future president wasn’t saying that “people of faith had no role in the public sphere,” as Santorum put it, but that it should not be a disqualifying factor for candidates, nor should it supersede the oath of office. But Santorum, himself a Catholic, seems to legitimately reject much of Kennedy’s thought on the matter.
If you can’t watch the video or would prefer to read a transcript, it’s here. The video above features all but the last sentence of Kennedy’s speech; to see the final sentence, plus a question-and-answer session, click here.
